Cote d’Ivoire will play their opening game against Portugal in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, with their second encounter at Johannesburg’s Soccer City Stadium against Brazil.
The route between Nelson Mandela Bay and Johannesburg are serviced by the major airlines and intercity buses. By driving, you can take in the following provinces: the Eastern Cape, the Free State and finally Gauteng.
Travelling options from Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg
By plane: Most major airlines run daily flights between Port Elizabeth Airport and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, with flights taking an average of 1hr30mins.
By car: Though driving from Port Elizabeth takes around ten hours, this is a rewarding route which meanders from the coastal towns to the interior. First take the N2 road to Grahamstown, a place rich in historical significance. There are two routes you can take once you reach Grahamstown. One is to follow the route to Cradock, which will lead you to Mangaung/ Bloemfontein via small towns such as Middleburg. Alternatively, you can make your way to Queenstown on the N6, going past Aliwal North and then on to Mangaung/ Bloemfontein. Once there, the N1 road will lead you to Johannesburg.
By bus: Most intercity bus companies service the route between Nelson Mandela Bay and Johannesburg. The trip will take you around 14 hours and in most cases is overnight.
By train: Catch a train from the Port Elizabeth train station in the city centre via Bloemfontein and on to Johannesburg’s Park Station, which is also in the city’s centre. Though time-consuming, this is a viable option if you are in no hurry and wish to explore the country.
The Elephants will then move from Johannesburg to Nelspruit to play Korea DPR. There are a number of ways to get to Nelspruit from Johannesburg, while for the 2010 FIFA World Cup there will be regular flights between the two cities.
Travel options from Johannesburg to Nelspruit
By plane: There will be regular flights during South Africa 2010 between Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and the Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport – situated around 23km outside of Nelspruit and 30 minutes’ drive from the world-renowned Kruger National Park.
By car: With a distance of 358km separating Nelspruit and Johannesburg, driving is certainly a popular option and should take around four hours in normal conditions. From Johannesburg you need to get onto the N12 East which will eventually lead you onto the N4 which will take you directly into Nelspruit, passing the town of Witbank on your way.
By bus: There are numerous bus services between the two cities. The Park Station bus station in Johannesburg is situated in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) and can be accessed from Rissik Street.
By trains: You can also take a train to Nelspruit from Johannesburg which you can catch from Park Station. The station is in the Johannesburg CBD and can be accessed from Rissik Street.
